今回のインタビューでは、Naohiroさんの最新アルバム「(Not) Alone」について、そのアルバムが故郷とどう繋がっているか、そして自主レーベル「YOU ARE THE SEA」の設立について話を聞いていきます。早速始めましょう。(Not) Aloneは、ノスタルジックで軽やかな雰囲気を持つ美しいプロジェクトですね。アルバムの制作中に、故郷の新潟に戻られたと聞いたのですが、そのことについて教えてもらえますか?この移住の経緯は、アルバムのタイトルコンセプトである「(Not) Alone」とどのように繋がっているのでしょうか?

In this interview we speak with Naohiro about his latest album "(Not) Alone"; how it ties into his hometown, as well as the creation of his label, "YOU ARE THE SEA". Let's dive right in. (Not) Alone is a beautiful project with a sort of nostalgic, lighthearted mood to it. You mentioned to me that during the production of this album, you had moved back to your hometown, in Niigata. Can you tell me about that? How does this journey fit in with your album title concept; (Not) Alone?

(Not) Aloneの制作は、東京でひとり暮らしをしている時に始めました。

自分はその頃とても孤独を感じていて、俯いて歩くことが多かったです。誰しもが様々な場面で、一人だけど独りじゃなかったり、逆に、一人じゃないけど独りだったりすることをアルバムのテーマにしています。(Not) Aloneの制作中に父が他界したので、東京から故郷の新潟に引っ越したのですが、アルバムの1曲目のYou’re the Seaだけその後に作曲を終えました。父は海が好きだったことと、海に散骨されることを望んでいたので、この曲名にしてます。

I started working on (Not) Alone when I was living alone in Tokyo. I felt very lonely at the time, and often walked with my head down. The theme of the album is that everyone is alone but not alone in various situations, or conversely, not alone but lonely. My father passed away while I was working on (Not) Alone, so I moved from Tokyo to my hometown of Niigata, and I only finished writing the first song on the album, You're the Sea, after that. I chose this song title because my father loved the sea and wanted his bones to be scattered at sea.

Damon:

お父さんはどんな音楽を楽しんでいたのでしょうか?特に好きだった曲やアーティストはありますか?ご両親から音楽的な影響を受けたりしましたか?？

What kind of music did your father enjoy? Are there any specific songs or artists that he loved? Did your parents influence your taste in music?

Naohiro:

自分と違って、アメリカや暖かい地域で流れていそうな陽気な音楽が比較的好きだったみたいです。父は車でドライブするのがとても好きだったので、一緒に車内で頻繁に音楽を聴いていました。音楽に熱心な家族というわけではなかったので、音楽的な影響はあまり受けませんでした。

Unlike me, he seemed to like the kind of cheerful music that you'd hear in America or warmer climates. My father loved going on car rides, so we would often listen to music in the car together. We weren't a particularly musically inclined family, so I wasn't influenced much musically.

Damon:

子供の頃はどんな感じでしたか?そして、どのようにして音楽を始めることになったのでしょうか?新潟には活発な音楽シーンがあったりしますか?

What was your childhood like? And how did you end up getting into music? Does Niigata have a strong local music scene?

Naohiro

子供の頃はバスケットボールやアニメやゲームが好きでしたが、仲の良かった友達がロックバンドが好きで、自分もロックバンドを聴くようになりました。高校生の時に友達がバンドをやっていたので、ライブハウスによく行っていたり、同じ頃にクラシックギターを習い始めて、色々な音楽を聴くようになって、自分も作曲をするようになりました。新潟は自然が豊かで綺麗な景色がたくさんあって、その景色に音楽が合うなと自分は思ってます。新潟にはフジロックフェスティバルもやっていたりするので、自分は行ったことがありませんが、いつか行ってみたいです。

When I was a kid, I liked basketball, anime, and games, but a close friend of mine liked rock bands, so I started listening to rock bands too. In high school, my friends were in a band, so I would often go to live music club. Around the same time, I started learning classical guitar and started listening to a lot of different kinds of music, and I started composing music myself.

Niigata is rich in nature and has lots of beautiful scenery, and I think music suits those scenery. Niigata also holds the Fuji Rock Festival, and although I've never been, I'd like to go someday.

Damon:

YOU ARE THE SEA RECORDSのプロジェクトにとても興味があります。レーベルを立ち上げた経緯について教えてもらえますか?今後の予定や構想についても聞かせてください。

I’m very interested in your YOU ARE THE SEA RECORDS project. Can you describe the process of starting the label for me? What do you have planned for it?

Naohiro:

東京から新潟に引っ越した時に、今までの環境とは変わるので、作曲を続けられるか不安があったのですが、思いの外、新潟で作曲が捗って曲をたくさん作れたので、せっかくリリースするなら自主レーベルを作ってリリースしようと思ったのがきっかけです。アルバムの1曲目のYou’re the Seaという名前が気に入ったことと、今回のアルバムのテーマや制作の過程に共通して、聴いてくれた人が一人ぼっちでも楽しめるような音楽を、これからも作っていきたいという思いを込めています。

次にリリースするアルバムの制作はほぼ終わっていて、その次にリリースするアルバムの作曲を現在進めています。新潟の風景に合うような曲を作っているので、もし機会があればそちらも聴いてみていただけたら嬉しいです。ライブは長い期間やっていないのですが、ピアノやギターの演奏がもう少し上手くなったら、ライブもやりたいなと思っています。いつになるかわかりませんが。

When I moved from Tokyo to Niigata, I was worried about whether I would be able to continue composing, since it would be a change from my previous environment, but I was able to make a lot of songs in Niigata more easily than I expected, so I thought that if I was going to release songs, I should create my own label and release them there. I liked the name of the first song on the album, You're the Sea, and it's consistent with the theme and production process of this album, and I want to continue making music that people can enjoy even when they're alone.

The production of my next album is almost finished, and I'm currently working on composing the album after that. I'm writing songs that fit the scenery of Niigata, so I'd be happy if you'd listen to them. I haven't done a live performance for a long time, but once I get a little better at playing the piano and guitar, I'd like to do one. I'm not sure when that will be, though.

Damon:

この時期を経て、自分の将来や、何が大切なのかについて深く考えることがあったのではないかと思います。ここ数十年、より多くの「機会」を求めて大都市に移る人が多かったですが、最近では、何か違うものを求めて故郷に戻る人が増えてきているように感じます。アルバムを作った後も、新潟に住み続けているのでしょうか?東京に戻る予定はありますか?この経験は、これからの目標にどのような影響を与えましたか?

I imagine that this time has led you to deep reflections about your future, and about what is valuable. In recent decades we have seen people move to bigger cities for more “opportunity”. However, recently, It seems like more and more people are moving back to their hometowns in search of something different. Have you stayed in Niigata since creating the album? Do you have plans to move back to Tokyo? How has this experience impacted your goals for the future?

Naohiro:

父とのお別れが一瞬で、初めて死をとても身近に感じて、それは誰にでも起こりうることなんだなと改めて思いました。何十年も先のことはわかりませんが、しばらくの間は新潟で暮らすつもりです。今は新潟の生活の中で生まれる音楽を、沢山作りたいと思っています。

The moment I said goodbye to my father was in an instant, and for the first time I felt death very close to me. It made me realize that it can happen to anyone. I don't know what the next few decades will hold, but I plan to live in Niigata for a while. For now, I want to create lots of music that is born from life in Niigata.
